Dear Diary,

Spending a little time with Lucky Stars has helped me understand some things about myself, my family, and the world at large that had always sort of…boggled me before. She’s been the missing link behind a lot of social lessons that mom always used to drive into my head and I subsequently purged because, well. You know. Moms. A big one was how to guide conversation in a deliberate manner. Not ‘small talk’, specifically (I’m fine not being very good at that one) but targeted conversation from zero. It’s a pretty useful skill. Helps when you’re pitching ideas, or searching for jobs, or asking about sensitive issues, or flirting.

I am terrible at flirting.

No really. I admit it. I’m really bad at that. Cirocco used to equate it to watching the Friendship Express fall down the side of Canterlot Mountain and hit every rock on the way down. Its…its a sad, sad thing to watch. Every partner I’ve ever had, I’ve gotten through some other means. Often its simple body language. I read ponies well, I can usually tell what they want, and from there its just a matter of offering. You’d think that would be the toughest part of the whole ‘flirt’ equation, but nooo. There’s talking involved. 

Lucky, however, is somewhat brilliant at it, no doubt a result of her earlier career. And while my sister is also an accomplished public speaker, as is my mother, having somepony who isn’t a family member I grew up with explain a few things has helped cast it all in a different light. I don’t think I’m ever going to be very good at it, but at least I’ve got some new things to try.

And I cant argue with success, even if it was a sympathetic success. Tiki isn’t a Ponyville native, but I’ve seen here around between here and the coast several times and I’ve always had to stop myself from making little squueeeee noises as her mane bounced around. She’s outrageously adorable, and I’d always wanted to go and say hello, but I’d never really figured out what to say after hello. Lucky decided to push me into it anyway, introduced us, and I proceeded to embarrass myself in front of her for some half an hour before Tiki laughed, put a hoof to my mouth and told me that was enough of all that. Not my finest moment. Lucky just about died. Which is fortunate for me, as it will make it easier for me to murder her for all this later on.

But it all turned out for the best. Once I’d given up on trying to find things to say, Tiki filled in the gaps and I was able to just react, which I’m better at. And I think she found my befuddlement somewhat endearing, as she kept me around for the rest of the evening. Turns out we have a lot in common! Not the least of which is a similar mindset on the best way to kill a few hours on a warm Ponyvillian afternoon. All in all, a wonderful end to a wonderful day.

Now if I could just get Kite to stop mockingly pantomiming my flirting attempts.
